I repaired my front damaged altima 3.5 2007. I replaced the driver airbag, the deployment module(located under the arm rest console),the 2 front seat belts(male components) & the front hood crash sensor. All replacement parts are new oem , sold by a nissan dealership.
Once the new components have been installed I went to my local nissan dealer to have the airbag warning light resetted . The mechanic stopped the light from flashing by using a diagnostic tool (50$). Two weeks later the same warning began to blink again. I returned to the dealership asking to know the trouble code normally provided by the tool. After connecting the tool the service tech replied that the light was turned off and that the toll gave no trouble code whatsoever. Cynical, he said that may be my car is haunted. I paid another 50$ and went on. 6 days later the same lamp went on blinking again. I 've applied the diagnostic mode recommanded in the service manual(without consult III tool). At that time the lamp went off for two seconds then on for three seconds keeping on this cycle indefinitely.
According to these results , the service manual diagnostic chart explains the only thing to do is to connect the tool and erase the code. Is there anybody who know how to do this procedure successfully so that I can compare with the one in use at my local dealership. Thank you

If there are any unplugged components within the dash you will need to plug them in before attempting to reset the airbag light. Step 2 - Turn Ignition to 'On' To start the process get your watch ready and turn the ignition switch from 'Off' to 'On.' Step 3 - Time Airbag Light. Once the airbag light comes on it will stay on for a total of seven seconds. At Nissan, our owners and their passengers are our highest priority. We are recalling all vehicles in Australia that are affected by the recall and will replace the airbag inflator free of charge. We have been contacting affected owners involved in the recall, if you have not received communication but believe your vehicle is affected please.
The SRS module, also called the airbag electronic crash unit (ECU), is a critical piece of equipment in modern automobiles. The SRS module controls the deployment of the airbag by maintaining a constant exchange of information with the car's engine. When a crash that fits the ECU's parameters occurs, it deploys the airbags in a fraction of a second. The SRS module stores crash and other data, and when it is not functioning properly, it can prevent airbag deployment. Airbags are vital safety devices, so ensuring they are working properly is a must. Having an SRS module repaired or replaced by the dealer or repair shop can be very costly, so knowing how to repair an SRS module can be a great cost-saver.
Understanding Airbag Diagnostic Codes
Most modern cars are capable of doing an airbag diagnostic to determine whether all of the circuits and sensors of the airbag system are functioning properly. If any problems are detected, the SRS module gives the driver a signal in the form of the airbag indicator light, flashing it several times. To read the codes, count the number of times the light flashes before staying out. All airbag codes are double digit numbers, expressed in a series of flashes and pauses. For example, one flash, a pause, followed by four flashes is code 14.
Airbag Code | Description |
---|---|
12 | Low battery voltage |
13 | Airbag circuit grounded out or shorted |
14 | Short or ground on primary crash circuit |
21 | Improper mounting of airbag |
22 | Safing sensor output shorted to battery voltage |
23 | Safing sensor return circuit or input feed open |
24 | Output feed open |
32 to 35 | All pertain to problems with driver and passenger side airbags |
41-45 | All pertain to problems with right and left primary crash sensors |
These are the most commonly seen airbag codes. Airbag diagnostic codes go up to 53, and it is important that consumers repairing their own airbags, including the SRS module, be familiar with all of the codes.
How to Reset the Airbag Light
Once the diagnostic has been completed, the airbag light should be reset. To do this, loosen the retaining nut on the negative battery cable, and then remove the clamp from the negative terminal. Wait at least 60 seconds before reconnecting the cable to the terminal, making sure the nut is replaced tightly. This should reset the SRS module. To verify that it has indeed been reset, turn on the ignition to see of the airbag light flashes; if not, the reset has been successful.
Locating the SRS Module
Whatever the problem with the SRS module, consumers choosing to replace or repair it themselves need to be able to find it. In most vehicles the SRS module is very close to the gear shift, either in front or behind it. To access the SRS module in this location, the transmission tunnel must be removed. In a few vehicles, however, it is located inside the glove box or under the front passenger seat.
Repairing the SRS Module
In the event there is a fault in the airbag system, or if the vehicle is involved in an airbag-deploying crash, the SRS module must be repaired or replaced. While there are a number of companies that perform this task for consumers, it is possible for it to be done at home. Before removing the airbag ECU it is very important to disconnect the negative battery cable first. This minimizes the chance of accidental airbag deployment.
Once the airbag module has been safely disconnected, the problem the diagnostic code signifies can be corrected. This may involve correcting shorted wires, replacing the car's battery, or even ensuring the airbag has been mounted properly. After the module has been repaired or replaced, turn the ignition key to 'accessories.' This means turning the key to the point before ignition but when many of the car's accessories can be used, such as the radio. Then reconnect the negative battery cable
Airbag Resetting Software
In the event of an accident, the SRS module stores crash data in a memory file. The airbag warning light then comes on, and even diagnostic tools cannot turn it off. While disconnecting the module from the battery for a period of time can reset the light, removal of the crash data requires computer software. Car owners in such a position can purchase or download airbag resetting software.
